With its non-spreading character and winter hardiness to -23ºC, this bamboo is a sustainable and stylish choice for any garden lover.

The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo likes a sip of water

The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' requires moderate to regular watering to thrive. It is important to water the plant thoroughly after planting, so that the soil can close around the roots. Make sure that the soil remains slightly moist afterwards, especially during dry periods. Once established, the bamboo can still benefit from regular watering, especially during hot summers. It is advisable to check the soil before watering, and make sure that it is not too wet or too dry. As a guideline, think of watering about once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions. During the winter months, the plant can usually get enough water with normal rainfall, but it is always good to keep an eye on this and water if necessary. It is important to prevent the soil from becoming soaked for long periods, as bamboo does not like waterlogging. By providing the correct water treatment, the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' will thrive and become a beautiful addition to your garden or patio.

Summer

During the summer it is very important that this plant, when it is outside, is kept well moist. Especially during the warm days it should be watered every day, so that the root ball is well moist. On the less warm days this can sometimes be skipped for a few days. This is so important because otherwise the plant 'drinks' moisture from its leaves, causing it to become dry and eventually die. This should of course be prevented.

Winter

When winter is just around the corner, the rules are reversed! If the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo is outside, it must remain dry so that the moisture does not freeze and damage the plant. The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo does not suffer from a dry root ball during this period, it is in a kind of hibernation!
When the plant is kept indoors during the winter it should be kept slightly moist, so not soaking wet (as in summer), but just so that the root ball feels slightly damp.

General rules

In addition to the above guidelines, it is best to follow these rules:

First, give the plant a little water. If the soil is dry within 2 days, it means it needs a little more water. Adjust the amount of water until it still feels slightly moist between 2 and 5 days after watering, and almost dry after 5 days. If it feels very wet after 5 days, wait until it is almost dry and water again, but reduce the amount.

Spraying

We recommend that you spray the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo with water weekly. However, we do not recommend this during hot summer days, so that you do it either in the evening after sunset, or on days when the sun shines little, because the water droplets bundle the incoming sunlight into small points that become very hot. These cause the leaves to dry out, or even burn through.
Apart from the detrimental effect of bright sunlight on wet leaves, misting has beneficial effects for your Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading Bamboo . Namely, it removes dust from the leaves, allowing them to better absorb sunlight and appear more beautiful, and it prevents certain types of pests.

Where is the best place to place the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo?

The Evergreen Fargesia 'Pingwu' is a beautiful and special bamboo that comes into its own as an eye-catcher in your garden, as an evergreen hedge or even on your terrace or balcony in a large pot. This bamboo thrives in both sun and shade, giving you flexibility in where to place it. With its deep green stems and striking white-yellow bracts, the 'Pingwu' is an attractive addition to any garden. The plant is winter-hardy to -23ºC and requires little maintenance, allowing you to enjoy its upright growth and decorative appearance without a care in the world. In short, an ideal choice for lovers of evergreen plants who are looking for an attractive addition to their outdoor space.

Light

The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo is a plant that likes a fair amount of sunlight. It likes to be in full sun or half shade, taking in all the light. Is it indoors? Then it wants a spot near a window or where light does come in. The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo requires at least 1 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day

Wind

Make sure that the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-invasive bamboo experiences as little wind as possible. Wind can damage the leaves, causing them to die off more quickly. A little wind is no problem.

Temperature requirements

Minimum temperature during the day: -23 ℃
At night minimum -23 ℃

Repotting, why and when?

Repotting the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' may be necessary if the plant becomes too large for its current pot or if you notice that the roots are reaching the bottom of the pot. This can result in stunted growth and can affect the health of the plant. It is advisable to repot the plant in the spring, when growth is active.

When repotting, check that the roots have completely penetrated the pot and that there is little room left for new growth. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current pot, so that the roots have enough room to continue growing. Make sure you use good quality potting soil that is well-draining. After repotting, it is important to water the plant well and let it get used to its new environment. This way, the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' can continue to thrive and grow beautifully.

General rules

When the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo has taken root (often every 2-3 years) we recommend repotting it in the spring. If it is always indoors, it does not matter. If it is outdoors, it is not a problem to repot it in the summer, but we advise against it in the autumn and winter, because it will not grow and take root optimally then. This can make it somewhat weak, and possibly suffer damage from frost.

When you choose to repot your Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo, choose a nice pot that is twice the size of the root ball. Place a layer of hydro grains at the bottom of the new pot, for better moisture control. It will thank you for that. Fill this layer with some Mediterranean potting soil. This type of soil ensures that the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo roots optimally and is fed. Then you can place the root ball on the ground. Make sure that the top of the root ball is slightly below the edge of the pot. Aim for a difference of 2 to 6 cm. This difference ensures that the water does not run off the root ball when you water it.
Every year you should replace the top layer of soil, because it hardens and 'wears out' in nutrients, due to regular watering and because of the sunlight on the upper edge of the root ball.

Diseases and pests

Bamboo is known for its strength and beauty, and the Evergreen Fargesia 'Pingwu' is no exception. This special bamboo adds a stylish touch to any garden or patio, with its upright growth and deep green stems that form a clump of approximately 1.5 metres in diameter. A striking feature of the 'Pingwu' is the white-yellow bracts that provide a unique contrast and fall off in winter, allowing the bamboo to retain its green splendour.

The Fargesia 'Pingwu' thrives in both sunny and shady environments and requires well-drained soil. With minimal effort, this bamboo can grow to a height of up to 4 metres and grows an average of 40-60 cm per year. One of the advantages of this bamboo is that it is non-invasive, so no additional measures are needed to keep it under control.

When it comes to diseases and pests, the Wintergreen Fargesia 'Pingwu' is fortunately generally quite resistant to common problems. However, as with all plants, preventative measures and regular checks are essential to prevent or treat any problems.

A common disease of bamboo is rust fungus, which occurs when conditions are humid. To prevent this, it is important to ensure that the plant has adequate air circulation and that the leaves do not remain damp for long periods of time. If rust fungus occurs, affected leaves can be removed and a fungicide can be applied according to the directions on the package.

Another problem that bamboo can face is aphids. These small creatures feed on the sap of the plant and can cause leaf damage. There are several ways to combat aphids, such as using natural enemies such as ladybugs, spraying the plant with a mild soap solution, or using insecticides if necessary.

It is also important to regularly inspect your bamboo for signs of other diseases or pests, such as spider mites or fungal infections. By being proactive and acting quickly when problems are noticed, you can maintain the health and beauty of your Evergreen Fargesia 'Pingwu'. With the right care and attention, this beautiful bamboo will continue to thrive and enhance your garden with its elegant appearance and evergreen leaves.

How and when to prune the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo?

The leaves of the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo will eventually wither. If this is the case with a leaf, you can simply cut the stem close to the trunk. It is not a problem to cut off an entire leaf with the stem of the plant. This is the way the plant forms its trunk.

How can I propagate the Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' - Non-spreading bamboo?

The Fargesia robusta 'Pingwu' can be propagated by division. This means that you can divide the plant into several parts, with each part containing a portion of the roots and stems to form a new specimen. This process is best done in the spring, when the plant starts to grow actively. Make sure that each newly planted part has enough space and nutrients to root and grow well. Propagating this bamboo plant in this way ensures healthy and strong new specimens that will display the same beautiful characteristics as the original plant.
